Why I Leave The Kids At Home

It is no secret that I love my husband the most in this world.  I also love and adore my children more than I can explain, but my first and most important earthly relationship is to my husband. We have always done everything we can to keep this relationship strong and close.  One way in which we choose to do this is to get away together and leave the kids at home.

I've been told more than once, "I don't know how you can leave the kids and go away."  and I do understand where they are coming from. I also understand this isn't a viable option for everyone because I kind of won the lottery with an amazing support system of grandparents and "auntie" who love these kids and take great care of them! But leaving them is also probably one of the hardest things I do.  As a homeschooling, stay-at-home mom, I literally spend all day everyday with them.  It is very difficult for me to say goodbye and fly away from them. In fact, there are usually weeks if not months of anxiety that are related to that moment of leaving the house without them.  The funny thing is, for the most part the kids are excited and can't wait for us to leave.  I am the one who his sad.  It is not easy, but the time away is so worth it!

Here soon, Peter and I will be embarking on another fun adventure that will leave us saying goodbye to the kids and leaving them home. Peter's new job has required a bit more travel than we are used to and after his 2 week absence last winter I told him I get to go on the next big trip away!  As I look back on fond memories I have between him and I, a lot (but not all) are part of our adventures and time away. A private sunset dinner on the beach in Jamaica. An amazing dinner before running back to the hotel among tornado warnings in Atlanta.  Incredible evenings spent walking around Disneyland hand-in-hand, or even hours spent sitting on park benches with morning sickness because we had no idea I would be 5 weeks pregnant on our anniversary trip.  Falling more in love with each other through service together in Ethiopia. Memory after memory is played over the movie reel in my head as I remember each of these trips, and more.  While this will be a working trip for Peter, I also have no doubt that there are wonderful memories that will be made!

I'm not sure if vacations count as a love language, but they definitely recharge the batteries.  I for one, am looking forward to a lot of peace of quiet and time to myself.  4 kids under 5 can get to you after awhile. I adore my little family and I know I will miss them like crazy, but the break is so needed and I am so ready for it!  I invest into them day in and day out, it's what I love doing and it is what I want to do. But even the lowliest of full time jobs gives you 2 weeks off a year.  I need breaks and vacation days to recharge the batteries. I can't wait to  catch up on some sleep, read some books, and just relax for a bit!

Peter and I will enjoy the time to recharge as a couple.  Do you have any idea how hard it is to even utter 2 sentences to each other at dinnertime with 4 kids?  I know most of you do, because you have live this crazy life too!    When the cards line up, and I can afford the plane ticket and get the kids squared away, I will always be by his side!  Time together can be hard to come by, but these trips are so good for us as a couple.  It brings us closer together and reminds us that we're still in this journey together and will always prioritize our marriage first!

I feel very lucky that I have such an amazing support system that makes these trips possible. It's great to know we can get away and not worry about the kids (even though I still do).  I will for sure be posting about our trip!  Here's a little hint of where we're going to be taking off to.  Feels like a dream come true!

Awana Awards!

Last night, my little cubbies ended the year.

They cleaned up on awards! I was super proud of them because they were able to finish their entire book of verses in a very shortened year! I think they learned 7 in the last 2 weeks to complete the books!

They also got awards for their attendance too. So good job boys!

After the awards we returned to grandma's house for yummy celebration ice cream sundae's!

Little Sister got to celebrate too!

They worked really hard this year and enjoyed the Awana program! I highly recommend it to anyone who has a club local to them.  Next year Malachi will be moving up to Sparks and Sabrina will be joining Eli in the Cubby program!

Sabrina's School Year

Sabrina has finished her 2 year old preschool.  Why would we even bother with 2 year old preschool?  Well, because she wanted to and she loved it!  It was really just for fun and for her and to help her feel like school is fun. And that was succesful.  She did learn a few things - some letter and number recognition and she's great at counting to 25!

She is also very much so looking forward to starting 3 year old preschool, but she is also really enjoying some sunshine and shades in the free time!

I Am Blessed

As everyone knows, today is Mother's Day.  A day we celebrate mom's.     I remember not too many years ago that Mother's Day was a reminder for what I didn't have yet. I am so grateful that God has blessed our lives with the 4 precious kids we now have!  Some days it felt like my dream would never come true, but then God blessed us - quickly!  And now here I am, the tired and very busy mama of 4 beautiful children!  2 boys and 2 girls. 2 born out of my body and 2 born by their first mama's.

Oh to my firstborn son.  The one we waited so long for, and it felt like agony at the time.  The one who I saw for the first time in photos just days before Mother's Day 5 years ago.  The one who I traveled halfway around the world to hold in my arms.  The one who gave me a unique and heartfelt love for a whole different country and culture.  The one who now, is old enough to start asking questions that I don't have the answers for. Oh, how I wish I had answers.  The one with who I have spent every day of the last 3 years wishing and longing that we would get word that our search for his mother has been succesful. I don't think I will ever be able to give up.  Because she is a part of him.  The wait was long, but God knew what he was doing.  He gave us an incredible firstborn.  One who loves all his younger siblings with such gentle leadership.  We have been blessed!

Then there is our second born!   The one who I thought my eyes were deceiving me when I saw 2 lines on a test for the very first time.  The one who kept me feeling quite ill on those flights to Ethiopia to get his big brother. The one who surprised me yet again as he decided to come earlier than we were expecting. The one who fought very hard for those very first breaths in this world.  The one who I didn't get to hold for 24 hours and who was hooked up to all the wires.  The one who scared me the most!  The one who is stubborn, yet sweet and reminds me so much of his father!  We have been blessed!

And then our 3rd born.  Our first sweet princess.  The one who really surprised me.  The one who scared me half to death while pregnant. The one who kept me on bed rest.  The one who made me cry when her daddy announced she was a girl.  The one who has been a princess since the day of her birth.  The one who was so easy and slept through the night at 5 weeks old.  The one who was the happiest baby ever born.   The one who is a princess through and through, but a tough princess that you don't want to mess with!  We have been blessed!

And finally, our youngest little bundle. The one who made me a mother again since last Mother's Day! The one we were told was a girl, then a boy, then a girl again. The one who rounded out our family perfectly. The one who was placed directly from her birth mama's arms into mine.  The one that I watched as her first mama whispered sweet I love you's in her ears and gave her a lifetime of kisses before saying goodbye for the last time.  The one who has kept me on my toes the most. The one who I celebrate each and every milestone because I know they are hard fought!  She is feisty and determined! We have been blessed!

I am so thankful that God saw fit to give me these 4 little blessings.  They exhaust me and push my buttons, but my heart is so full and I am so blessed to be mama to each and every one of them!  Happy Mother's Day to all the mama's out there. And for all of you who today is painful for one, whatever that reason might be - you are loved and not forgotten.

Eli's 3 year Preschool.

We are wrapping up this year of home school and I am proud to say that Eli has officially finished his 3 year preschool!  If I would let him, he would get going on K4, because he is so excited to start it and get reading and writing like Malachi!  But I told him we need to take just a short break and will get started on K4 in July.
